Candidate for the Pen.—For some lime pa*ta young rough, uam-ed Jethoro Evick, has been making desperate efforts to break into the penitentiary, and his last esoapade will no doubt land him there just as soon as the authorities can lay their hands upon him. For a long time a gang of youngsters, of which Evick is one of the leaders, have made their headquarters about the piles of spokes and rims at th Ohio Wheel Factory, playing cards, drinking and loating. East Monday afternoon, Evick got into a quarrel with a fellow named William Steeple, which resulted in a tight in which Evick knocked him down with a wheel rim and then stabbed him with a pockot knife. The wound is a serious one and oauie very near being fatal. Evick skipped but cannot evade the authorities very long. He la one of the gang arrested last summer for breaking into a box car, and only last Saturday, in a saloon row, ho struck a man over the head with a billiard cue, laying open the scalp and making a serious wound. Evick ia only about eighteeu years of age, but is mauy years older in crime, aud nothing short of the penitentiary will ever settle him.
