Defendants DeniedBail In ProvidencePROVIDENCE (AP) - Two defendants, a woman charged with the murder of her three-year-old son and a youth charged with rape and robbery! were dented bail by Superior Court judges Tuesday because of the weight of the evidence against them..Mrs, Carol D, Cooper, 27, of North Kingstown, was denied ball alter a hearing by Judge Arthur A. Carrellas.She'is accused of giving the child, John C, Cooper, a fatalbeating.Her husband, John J, Cooper, was placed in {4,000 bail on a charge of assaulting the child with a dangerous weapon, a cut--ting board, on or about May 15.The youth held without bail is StevenB, Rodi, 17, charged with robbing two women and raping one of them early on the afternoon of last May 13 in a .Providence beauty parlor. He came ■before Judge William M. Mackenzie.The constitutional issues in the murder and rape and robbery cases were the same, asoutlined before Judge CarreUas by Albert E. Derobbia, an assistant attorney general, and before Judge Mackenzie by William J. Counihan Jr., a special assistant to the attorney gener-al.The punishment for first degree murder Is mandatory life in prison. Both rape and robbery carry maximum sentences of life.Derobbio and Counihan cited constitutional provisions saying that when proof of guilt Is evident or the presumption of guilt great in cases where the life sentence may be imposed, bail may be denied. Both prosecutors placed witnesses on the stand to substantiate their contentions of great presumption.
