Mo., July 8 (UP)— Baltimore authorities telephoned local police today to hold James Sammons, Chicago gangster, in connection with a $45,000 payroll robbery there in 1926, Sammons was ordered held without bond pending a preliminary hearing July 20.Kansas City police also were in communication with St. Paul au- I thorities on the possibility that I Sammons might have been connected with the William Hamm kidnaping there.Doubts Man Wanted St. Paul, July 8 (UP)—PoliceChief Thomas Dahill today expressed doubt that James Sammons, under arrest at Kansas City, was involved in the $100,000 kidnaping of William Hamm a month ago.However, information asked by Kansas City police to check their theory that Sammons might havehad a hand was dispatched by air mail.Dahill said that Sammons wasj not wanted by St. Paul authorities in the abduction but added that he would cooperate with Kansas City police in their investigation.Bills FoundFour $1,000 and four $500 bills were found on Sammons. The serial numbers were furnished to Dahill by the United Press for a check on the possibility that the bills may have been part of the ransom paid for Hamm’s release.“The numbers are of no value to us,” said Dahill. “The bills could not have been part of the ransom.”Authorities were interested in the fact that Sammons was arrested at the home of a friend of Verne C. Miller, alleged gangster. It has been reported that St. Paul police are seeking to question him in the Hamm kidnaping.
