POLICEMAN FELL INTO OPEN TRAPMedical Examiner Leary Makes InvestigationSurveys Premises Where Brennan Received Fatal injuriesMedical Examiner Timothy Leary, accompanied by Cn.pt Herbert W. flood win ef the Dudley-st Station, Roxbury, marie a survey today of the premises at Warren and Clifford sts, Roxbury. where on the morning of the Fourth, Reserveman Michael Brennan of Station 0 was foundUnconscious from injuries as the result cf. which he died early this morning in the City Hospital.The Medical Examiner said that there was an open trap at the store at 303 warren st, Roxbury. Everything ••imli-cated, he said, that Brennan while patrolling along Clifford si, found the door of the store open and walking in to search the place fell into the open trap.On -regaining consciousness some time later he groped his way out of the cel lar and up the passageway immediately adjoining, whore he was found, his hat and coat and some of his police equipment being missing. The examiner believes it was only natural that the officer when in a semiconscious condition should shed his heavy coat, and it Is not strange, he continued, that revolver and club would fall from their place when lie was groping along unsteady because of his weakened condition.Dr Leary made a thorough search of the vicinity. It is evident, he considers, that, several boyn have been bunking in the collar of the vacant store at 304 Warren st. next door to where the officers hat was found. The medical examiner observed that the partition between 302 and 301 was broken and it is believed that the boys entered the building at 304 and made their way into 302 through this break in the wall. They had the trapdoor open, the doctor imagines, to give them light when day broke. An old mattress and another bunk were J°und in the cellar at 304, indicating that the boys were sleeping there the night before the Fourth.Dr Leary says that, the door to the store was opened from-the inside because there is in? look, only a bolt on it. It is believed that the boys left it open so they could run in there and out of sight easily.Capt Goodwin arrived at the conelu-jjn made by the medical examiner after he went over the ground several days ago. This morning Dr Leary complimented Capt Goodwin for the thoroughness with which the ease was investigated. Capt Goodwin lodnv denied that Brennad’s ring was missing and that his necktie was torn.Capt Goodwin said that Brennan was seen about 2 in the morning of the Fourth standing at Clifford and Warren sts, whoro he was passed by Sergt Lyons and patrolman Coffey. The station last heard from him about 3 when he sent in a duty call from the box at Warren st and Walnut; av, about a quarter of a mile distant.About 7:JC on the morning of the Fourth im was seer. In the passageway back of the Warren-st houses in a dazed condition. The man and woman who policed him did not know lie was a policeman because his coat and hat were missing. In the meantime the police were searching for him. because It. was noticed at. the station lie did not. send in a duly call for more than an hour.
