--Notorious Convict DiesVATLANTA, Ga. (AP) — The notorious Georgia convict who once said “I always thought it smart to be a glamor boy” has been given a pauper’s burial at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.The death of Harold James “Jim” Meriwether, who once headed the list of Georgia’s most wanted criminals, wasdisclosed Tuesday.Authorities said the 56-yearold convicted robber, burglar, auto thief and narcotics peddler died of a liver ailment at an Augusta hospital on June 20.The body remained unclaimed, authorities said, and it was returned to prison and buries in a pauper’s grave.Meriwether was a native of Dalton, Ga, He had escaped several times from prison but had been in jail since his last capture by the FBI some 10 years ago.He made his last escape by folding his 5-foot-ll frame into a garbage can, then stealing a prison vehicle at the garbage dump. He was confined at Rock Quarry Prison at Buford at the time.Meriwether was in and out of jail from the time he was 19. He spent all but two years of his adult life in prison.“I’s like to be like an ordinary person, but I can’t,” Meriwether conceded after he was captured in 1961.¥ ¥ ¥
