Men Face Thrw ChargesTwo Held In Robbery CaseIredell County Sheriff LeRoy Reavis today reported the arrest of two men in the robbery of Miss Nettie Swisher at her home on Wednesday night. Miss Swisher, owner and operator of Swisher's Grocery on route 2, Cleveland, had reported the crime shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.The men, Vance Edward Adams, 20, and Wendell Lee Myers, 19, both of route 4, Statesville, were picked up at approximately 7 p.m. Thursday. Working quickly, Deputies Gary Johnson, Hartsell Warren, and Howard Taylor had the suspects in custody less than 24 hours after the crime had been committed. They were charged with breaking and entering, larceny, and common law robbery.The deputies also recovered fSO.79 from under a bridge onBell Road between US 64 and 70. The bridge is several miles from where the reported robbery took place, but in the neighborhood of both men's homes.In her statement to the investigating officers, Miss Swisher said that she walked from the store to her home, next to the store, shortly after 8 o’clock Wednesday. She said she thought it strange when the light did not come on as she flipped the switch, but before she had time for furtherreaction, an unidentifiedassailant had thrown a blanket over her head.Miss Swisher said she was then knocked down and a cigar box containing the day's receipts was snatched from her grasp. Although she admitted that she had not seen her attacker, she told the deputies, I know itwas a man.It was later determined that entry had been made by breaking a window open into a front bedroom. The men then removed lightbulbs from the bedroom, the front hall, and the rear porch.A check of the area for anyone who might have seen something which may have been of benefit in the investigation turned up Arthur White, a janitor at Cool Springs School, who had noticed a car parked behind the school around fi p.m. that afternoon. He told the officers there definitely were two men, and estimated their ages to be 20 years. Up until this time, officers had assumed there wag only one man involved.This information, along with physical evidence obtained at the scene of the crime, led to the arrests.
