King, of New River, about 75, has been charged with murder, according to Pulaski County Sheriff L. R, Summers. The shooting took place yesterday afternoon.Wirt died in a Radford hospital at 6:55 a .m. Still in a critical condition in the hospital is his wife, Mrs. Doris Einstein Wirt, 24, who was also shot. King is charged with felonious assault in connection with the shooting of Mrs. Wirt, Sheriff Summers said.He said King was released last night on a $2,000 bond but it was raised to $5,000 today.The sheriff said that the dead man is a former husband of King’s daughter, June King, and the father of three children by that marriage. •He said the shooting took place when King, on his way home from work, met his former son-in-law and Mrs. Wirt at an old railroad bed near New River. King is a guard at the Lee highway bridge over New River at Radford.Wirt was wounded four times and his wife was struck in the chest, the sheriff added. Sheriff Summers also quoted King that he had not intended shooting Mrs. Wirt, but she stepped between the two men.Affer the shooting. King gave himself up to Deputy Sheriff Merle Ratcliffe. a neighbor, Sheriff Summers said.
