HENDERSON SHERIFF DEFIES EFFORTS OF CROWD LYNCH NEGRONEGRO YOUTH HELD IN ATHENS JAIL CONNECTION ATTACK ON WHITE WOMANATHENS, July 2.—lt;^V-Hender-son county officials said today It appeared certain there would be no further trouble in the case of a young negro who was threatened with lynching after a white woman was beaten and an attempt made to criminally attack her.Late last night a crowd of about 100 men swarmed into the county jail here, declaring they were bent upon killing the 16-year-old negro. Sheriff Jess Sweeten, unarmed, faced them and warned them he “would get rough if they tried to take the prisoner.The crowd dispersed but somo muttorings they would “come back were heard. The sheriff, however, said he expected no further attempts at violence.All was quiet at the Jail early today.The suspect, Sweeten said, admitted he beat and attempted to attack the 25-year old woman.Sweeten and his deputies summoned highway patrolmen from Dallas and Tyler early today after the crowd dispersed.Tho negro, 16, was arrested yesterday.Late last night the mob swarmed into the jail lobby, disarmed Deputy Sheriff Aubrey Corley. Sheriff Sweeten, without his pistol, faced the crowd nad told it he would “get rohgh if they tried to take the prisoner.Earlier in the day tho negro was taken to Tyler when a small crowd rushed at him as ho was arrested. Sweeten brought him back to Henderson county. Charges, he said, wouid be filed today.
