‘Funny Money’ Suspect Lands Added ChargesBy GENE MCCLELLAND Assistant Area EditorFriday wasn’t a good day for Alien Blye, 22, of 316 Dunbar Street.It turned sour shortly after he allegedly passed a doctored JUl bill at the Kayo Service Slntion near the state line.The $1 bill had $20 denominations pasted over the §1 circles on the front side, and was accepted before it was noticed at the service station.By the time it was discovered, shortly before 10 a.m., Blye had stopped at Cookenuur's State Line Texaco and bought some snacks.There he allegedly tried to slip a second “altered bill to attendant Larry McClellan, who said he “thought it was a practical juke” and handed the bill back to the man, who laughed, put the bill back in his pocket, and paid for his purchases with a regular $1 bill.But a second clerk in the store recalled having seen an earlier story in the Times-News about a similar bill being passed elsewhere. Not seeing the joke, he called the Kingsport Police Department, alerting them that the man was headed into Kingsport along Lynn Garden Drive. ,Blye was picked up a short time later.He was being held in the Kingsport Police Department for Scott County authorities when he bolted out of the station while he and Capl. Brady Lane and Sgt. Robert Moore were wailing in a hallway for an elevator to take him up to the jail,Blye was located and recaptured about 11:30 a.m. by Patrolman Sgt. Melvin Doty a few minutes after his escape. He was hiding behind a metal building on Yadkin Street nnd was apprehended without difficulty.Blye was uncuffed when he escaped, but he was. returned to the jail with his hands cuffed behind his back. He was to be charged with being a fugitive from justice,; escape, and an additional charge of possession of marijuana before being allowed to waive extradition to Scott County.Police said he had n small quantity of the weed in ;his shoe when he was raptured. !In Scott County a charge of attempting to obtain money under false pretenses, involving the incident at Cwjkejiuur'.s, and a second charge of defrauding, involving the passing of the bogus money at the Kayo Station, await his arrival there.And worse for Blye, a call to the Treasury Department in Roanoke by the Scott Cnunly Sheriffs Department resulted in plans by that agency to charge Blye with “defacing United States currency.The bill passed at the Kayo Station was placed in the custody of the Scott County Sheriffs Department Friday,, afternoon.
