Blunden trial resumes todayThe trial of a 2-year-old Fort Macleod man charged with murdering an 84-year-old Brocket woman resumes in Fort Macleod Supreme Court today. The trial, that of Donald Blunden, was adjourned May 14 at the conclusion of the Crown’s evidence. At that time Mr. Justice W. J. C. Kirby ordered Mr. Blunden be sent to the Alberta Hospital at Oliver for a psychiatric examination. It’s expected a psychiatrist will testify for the defence today. The Crown may also get a psychiatrist to testify. The strongest Crown evidence introduced has been a statement given by Mr. Blunden to the RCMP in which he said he raped Angeline Provost — the woman he’s charged with murdering — at the Gordon Sommerfeldt home in Fort Macleod on June 23, 1974.Mrs. Provost, a long-timeresident of Brocket, was living with her granddaughter at her home in Fort Macleod. The pathologist who examined Mrs. Provost- after she. died testified she died of collapsed lungs while the doctor who examined her when she was brought into Fort Macleod hospital June 23 said she died of ^pneumonia. Both doctors testified, however, the pneumonia and the collapsed lungs were caused by broken ribs and a broken hip. Mrs. Provost died June 29, six days after she was admitted to hospital. The Crown also introduced a statement given by Mrs; Provost before she died in which she identified Mr. Blunden — who she had seen in a line-up — as the man who has assaulted her. Mr. Blunden has been in custody since June, 1974.
