McCarty described hint in a report to the court as a confidenceman who embarked on a criminal career in 1921.“He is a habitual criminal and does not wish to be rehabilitated,” Miss McCarty said.She told the court that Dudleyrefused to cooperate with lier and said he would rather “go down figh'ing.The Los Angeles widow, Mrs. Dorothy Van Ness, testified during she trial lhat she had fallen in love with a man she knew as James R Billings, who was in reality Dudley's alleged partner in crime, Eugene F. Londos. Dudley was convicted of plotting with Londos and another man and a woman in a horse race swindle.
