THIS REMINDS US of a little incident contemporary with the events as above narrated Jim Hicks was running a saloon where Kathryn Noe is now located Jim was a big cog in the Nelson machine that put the new administration in, but in common with the other saloon-keepers had to close up at eleven o’clock with the rest of them. This night we speak of the usua’ eleven o’clock rap from the policeman’s baton sounded and all hands at the bar began to retire. However, Jim, who still had a thirst and was not at all inclined to go home, gave the wink to John Doyle, Wally Quinn and the writer, who also were not inclined to take to the proverbial hay. This could mean but one thing at this time of night and under the circumstances and the aforementioned trio did not lack the alertness to diagnose Jim’s meaning. They went out with the rest but loitered about the front of the place waiting for the other rejected to go on home, which they finally did. Then Jim emerged from the gloom of the interior with his arms full of Star Union in quarts, and the quartet seated themselves on the stoop and proceeded to dispatch the contents. On bottle was assigned to each pair and Jim as generalissimo of the party chose Wally as his drinking buddy, so we were paired with Doyle. At first the significance of Jim’s selection did not dawn on either John or the writer, but after a couple of bottles had been drank it was very clear why Jim had selected Wally. Quinn was not of very robust build, more of the cadaverous type and had a predeliction for harder liquor
