RACE WILDLYTHRU 2 LANES OF ARMED MENIn Effort to Escape After Assaultingand Robbing Brilliant Merchant Wild Ride Through Hail of Lead Ends Here — Two Men Captured and Two Escape—Enraged Citizens Threaten Violence.This county experienced an ep-sode in the auto bandit crime A’ave that has been sweeping the :ountry when four unmasked men assaulted William J. Hukill, an aged grocer at Brilliant, last evening, robbed their victim of $67 in cash and sped northward in a high powered Oldsmobile. The driver of the machine, Clyde Campbell, of East Liverpool, was captured later In the evening In Steubenville after he and his companions had miraculously escaped death in twice driving through a fusilade of bullets which rained on them from guns manned by citizens at George Run and Mingo. Another alleged member of the party was taken off ut street car at Welisville and locked up on suspicion. The other two bandits had evaded arrest up to noon to--ay.Yesterday wan pay day at Min-and vicinity and Mr. Hukill made large collections. At 7 o'clock he took more than $2,000 from the cash register, placing the hills in an inside vest pocket and masli amounting to $6? in two .'VtseB which he carried in his| Sheriff Ed. Lucas and the Steubenville police were then com-jmunicated with-and a posse of officers went to the lower end of this city to meet the machine. The bandits drove up Prospect avenue, ; however. Here the driver Camp-' bell, was taken into custody by local police arid Qfficer Nick Carter of the Mingo force who fbllow-ed the bandits in a smaller machine. Campbell Immediately stated that he was a victim of circum-[ stance. That he Mad been compelled to drive the. party of ban-’ dita here from East Liverpool. One of the party yelled Let’s have-him” (mean' ing the prisoner) but the Mingo police succeeded in getting him into a cell unharriied.Marshall A. S. McIntyre and Mayor Scamahom, of Brilliant, requested that the prisoner bo given over to them to be taken back to Brilliant but tills wes considered unwise because of the high feeling of the crowd. He was kept in the Mingo lockup all night’ Second Man is Caught Officer Ernest Schroeder, of the local force, encountered a man answering the description of one of the bandits in the outskirts of this city last night. The fellow was Btopped and questioned but gavo a good story, Insisting that he was a laborer from the Fol-lansbee Bros, construction camp near Toronto. He wore felt boots and was dressed as a workman. The officer clever)y allowed him to board a car bound for Toronto.fen he tipped the~conductor off the holdup with the order to telephone the local department if ihe passenger went beyond Toronto.
