In loing so the blood gushed from a wound, j ut the officers believed at that time that loth had been shot but once and it was ioncluded the blood on the back of (he head vas caused by the scalp being cut when the ifficer fell to the pavement. However, when he undertaker proceeded to wash the body le found that there was a bullet hole two nches behind and half an inch below the eft ear. Yesterday a report was n circulation to the effect that the dead loliceman had been drinking and at once n effort, was made to prove or disprove these iiterances. The first thing done was to isit -the stables of the transfer company, /here Roth eats his supper. Here it was earned that when Roth left, a very shorn ime prior to the tragedy, he was sober. He put in n early appearance and without the slight-st hesitation he admitted he had seen Roth .1 the transfer stables at 10 o’clock and hat they were standing in front of the lullding when Sergeant Beattie came along, ’hey stood out in the cold talking for sev-ral minutes. Finally Beattie came out and aid to Roth. i‘You’11 freeze yourself to oath standing there.” It was at this mo-nent that Roth walked away from Roper .ml hurried off down the street with a man .ho was waiting for him. Roper came up own and later went to bed.It will be recalled that a few nights ago ’atrolman Roth arrested May Call and iinnie Snider, two notorious white women rho have a house on South First street. It i dll also be recalled that at the time Roth iade the arrest the Express told how. a ew days previous he had gone to the house nd had been refused admission. It now eems that it was on the night of this visit a the Call bagnio that the first act in the rani a which terminated with the killing of j tie policeman was played. This visit with few future occurrences caused Roth to go j the engine house in search of Jim lishop Sunday night at midnight, to be auled away a corpse. Here Is the Connecting T.ink.For some time it has been common talk raong the policemen that May Call and linnie Snider were in the habit of keeping , tie company of colored men.
