CITY HOUSINGCommission will interview for directorFirst round slated to begin at 9 a.m. on SaturdayBY BRIAN McGlLLIVARYbmcgillivary@record-eagl0.cornTRAVERSE CITY — City housing commissioners narrowed a field of 67 applicants to seven candidates, and hope upcoming interviews will unearth a new executive director who can transform the agency into a regional leader in affordable housing development. The agency’s executive director answers to the five-member Traverse City Housing Commission, while managing low-income housing complexes at Riverview Terrace and Orchard-view, plus administering a federal rental assistance program. But housing commissionerswant more than a manager; they seek a visionary leader able to develop new ways to study problems and arrive at solutions.Candidates offer a wide range of experiences in housing and other endeavors and come from as far away as Alaska, said Andy Smits, housing commission president. It’s a good mix of level of qualifications and different degrees of experience,” Smits said. My guess is it’s very likely the commission will come quickly to terms on who to invite back for final interviews.”Housing commissioners scheduled a first round of interviews over three days beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Governmental Center. They also will hold interviews on Sunday at I p.m. and wrap up Tuesday at 10 a.m. All interviews will take place in the committee room on the second floor of the Governmental Center.Candidates include: Michelle Reardon, Peninsula Township planner; Tom Kern, former executive director of the National Cherry Festival; Nicole Basch, housing manager for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians; J. Charles Downey, director of strategic planning for Keen Technical Solutions; Tony Lentych, general manager of Leelanau Wine Cel-lers; Irvin Marshall, of Tennessee, who has the most experience leading housing agencies, and Patrick Jordan, an assistant city manager from Alaska. The eventual pick will replace Ilah Honson, who worked at the housing commission for almost two decades prior to a contract buyout in August. The job will pay between $75,000 and $85,000 a year, plus bonuses.Second interviews are scheduled for February.
