Dr. Jane HodgsonnowvindicatedrST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -Her husband says it’s “pretty obvious” that Dr. Jane Hodgson has been vindicated by the U. S. Supreme Court decision striking down most states’ antiabortion laws.Dr. Hodgson, a St. Paul gynecologist, was convicted in November 1970 of violating the century-old Minnesota abortion law to test its constitutionality.The Supreme Court decision was handed down Monday as Dr. Hodgson was touring Florida on behalf of an abortion liberalization group. She was staying in a beach cottage in rural southern Florida and the cottage has no telephone.She hadn’t seen a newspaper when she talked to her husband, Dr. Frank Quattebaum, by telephone Monday. She had heard of the Supreme Court decision on a radio.“She called me this (Monday) afternoon in pouring rain from a phone booth at the side of the road,” Quattlebaum said In St. Paul. “She said she had just heard a blurb on her car radio. She's a conservative person, so she’s not quite sure . . . I hadn’t seen a newspaper at the time, so I couldn’t tell her anything. The mother, while in the fourth week of pregnancy, had contracted German measles, a condition that often causes severe birth defects.ST PAITT, Minn tAPDr. Hodgson gave up her St. Paul practice after her conviction. For a time she commuted to Washington, D. C., to serve as medical director of a family planning agency.She was given a 30-day suspended sentence and put on a year’s probation. Dr. Hodgson hoped for an unfavorable ruling by the Minnesota Supreme Court, where her appeal is pending, in order to take her fight to the U. S.
