Archie White, director of the Albuquerque division of the state police, and Sgt. Jerry Brunk, now assigned to Las Cruces. Both are veteran law enforcement officers.The probe, Mechem’s office said today, will be a thorough and con-j tinuing investigation of conditions at the .state penitentiary.” The governor, who is in Texas attending! a meeting of the Pecos River Com-! mission, issued his order through i executive secretary Charles DuTant. i Yesterday’s violence, in which 10 or 11 convicts were involved, was the second major flareup at the 80-yearmold institution within the past month and a half.In early December, the penitentiary was the scene of an attempted break by a group of convicts who held eight guards as hostages for 20 hours before giving up their attempt in the face of state police, national guardsmen and special-deputies called to emergency duty at the pen. The 14 convicts involved ’ in the uprising were put in solitary confinement for two weeks.
