This morning he was brought before Ueeonler Anderson on a charge of being “drunkand disorderly. fie then presented a sad appearance. His clothes were torn, and he had so vent I large wounds, tine upon the head and another upon the face, both of a seriouseluintcter. The eliarge against him w as dismissed.On inquiry into the matter it transpired that Tom Kicily is a shoemaker and was drinking Iasi night in Lockwood's saloon, where he had a diltieuity with a Mexican anti tlien struck at a man mimed K. Whalen, who was ill tin* saloon. Whalen then went out and brought in four other men and raised a further disturbances, and it is alleged Jumped upon Kielly. A bartender knotfn as John, whistled for the police. Zelgler came and arrested Kielly and then allowed him to go away, but on his returning, /edgier arrested him a second lime. As they were going to the polif-e station Ziegler drew Kielly into a mlHqiiite bush and then beat him about shamefully, it is supposed with a pair of nippers, and kicked him. It was then, billing thaj he would be killed, that Kielly raised the cry of murder, and citizens rushed to the seem*.Kielly admits that lie was somewhat under the inthteijee of liquor, but states that he was thoroughly cognisant ot all fhi|t occurred.The greater part of this uccuunt is derived from the personal statement of ltielly» and in justice to tlu* police a LimtT reporter was detailed to interview the City Marshal. He declined to say anything beyond that the matter must take its proper course. Indirectly it is learned that the police are investigating the atfuirand it is probuble that Ziegler will Im* suspended front duty pending the investigation.
