Organize Minute Men To t Fight Crime At La CrosseLa Crosse, Wit.—— Modern Minute Men, prepared to fly to arms the moment the telephone rings, will be fighting crime in this region soon.They will be in readiness day or night to trap criminals who commit sensational depredations In cities and villages of La Crosse county and then speed away in automobiles. The Minute Men are forming an organisation to block al] roads at the outskirts of communities the moment prearranged signals are sent out over a telephone network.Most of the Minute Men will be members of the American Legion and at s meeting tomorrow 69 of them will be sworn la as deputy sheriffs Sheriff Albert F. Riley will instruct them in their duties and J M. Storkerson, superintendent of the La Crosse Telephone company, will explain arrangements made by the company to flash to all members reports of crimes made to telephone operators by the sheriff**' office.Organizers expressed the hope that the Minute Men arrange- ! meat may become state-wide. Citizens and officials of eleven other counties already have manifested interest and will attend the meet* 1 lag here tomorrow. L. V. Wies-ensel, district commander of the American Legion, has urged members of all posts to aeud representatives Two Illinois officials. T P Sullivan, superintend* ' ent of the State Bureau of identification, and R. C. Saunders, in charge of crime prevention activities, will offer counsel to the new deputies.The Minute Men idea is not new in the county. Groups already have been organized in six communities, La Crosse, West Salem, Bangor, Onlaska, Holmen and Mtndora, and these groups will become part of the county organization. Test calls in several of the communities indicates that armed guards can cover all roads within six minutes after receiving an alarm.
