The Secret Treasonable Society.: * . * ••Gold Creek, Brown County, Indiana, 7January 2, 1863. jEd. Journal—It may be of some Interest to your many loyal readers to know how affairs seem to be going at this time in the “independent republic/’ and sorry indeed is their informant that no better report can be made. Of, the proceedings and investigations of the United States Court last summer, relative to certain secret organizations in this and other counties of the State, all are aware, but perhaps all do not know that they are now more rampant than before. Such is the case here. There was no Union ticket for county officers in this county at the last election, and the result of said election has so emboldened the scoundrels that Union men really have cause of alarm. The K. G. C’b have had their meetings often of late—once publicly at Taggart’s, on Salt Creek, again at Nashville on Now Year’s day; but most frequently at school-houses throughout the county. They claim to have five hundred in this county. Though throwing their influence with them, it is understood that J. S. Hester and Lew. ProsBer, our former representatives, are not members, butthank God, they are known and about “played out.”Mr. Taggart, the “lang syne” representative of this “magninimous people”—his own words in the Legislature—is well understood to be a traitor of the foulest stamp, and aleader of this infernal party who disgrace thename of Democracy. Will our tried and faithful Governor remember the few here who stand or fall for the cause of our Government? Will he “keep an eye out” here? That he will is the wish of a friend of theUnion.FTwiiGBFRTttoiYoicitia:wiIncwhivenfttheJDirTARefseciconEo’clI, i Xf
