DavisSun Journal StaffA California man arrested in New Bem for allegedly peddling $81,000 in cocaine is a suspect in the shooting death of a man in Tennessee.Sgt. Charles Dudley of the homicide division of the Chattanooga Police Department said he is questioning John William Brooks, 28, of Hawthorne, Calif., for a drug-related murder. Brooks is being held on $500,000 secured bond in Craven County jail.Brooks was arrested in New Bemkilograms of cocaine to Anthony Hargett and Dwain Robinson, both of whom are now in federal prison after drug convictions.Capt. John McAlexander of the New Bem Police Department said police had an outstanding warrant on Brooks for possession of cocaine. Arrested on that warrant, Brooks was subsequently charged with trafficking cocaine.Dudley visited New Bem the day after Brooks’ arrest and talked with informants here. He has also interviewed informants in Chattanooga and said he hopes to charge Brookstribute cocaine.Brooks is facing conspiracy to distribute cocaine charges in New Bem and could face federal charges as well, according to Dudley and Richard Broughton of the Raleigh office of the Drug Enforcement Administration.Chattanooga police believe Brooks arrived in Tennessee in May with another California man, armed with two kilograms of cocaine to sellthere.“Apparently the drug sales didn’t go quite like he thought they would, and our victim was found with three bullet holes in his head in June,” Dudley said.The other man has been charged with distributing cocaine and is inbut he did not want to release his name because he does not want informants to read up on the case and cut a plea bargain based on what they have gleaned from media reports.Dudley said police are investigating others in connection with the murder and drug charges and hope to make other arrests soon. Because no one has been arrested yet, Dudley would not release any other details about the murder.Capt. Alex Setzer of the New Bern Police Department said if Brooks were charged with murder, he would most likely be extradited to Tennessee to face those charges first and then return to Craven County to
