Billy Dauber guiltyof fraud, conspiracyA former Blue Island man reputed to have been involved in the crime syndicate was found guilty of conspiracy and several counts of fraud Monday.William (Billy) Dauber, 38, an alleged mortgage broker for the Church of Christ Manors, Inc., and 12 others were accused of stealing more than $1,000,000 in commissions in a mortgage fee scheme.The U.S. Attorney’s office said the Church of Christ Manors, Inc. arranged mortgages and construction loans for building projects and collected fees for the work but never met commitments or returned the money.It was also charged that the organization had illegally attempted to link itself with the Church of Christ and the Christian Church of America, although the group had no connection with the religious organizations.James Catuara, a reputed south suburban crime syndicate leader, and eight other men were found not guilty of fraud charges in the scheme.However, Dauber and three others, Charles York, 48. Stanley Schulman, 36, and Alex Gaus Jr., 48, were found guilty on charges of fraud and conspiracy.Dauber is also currently under indictment on a murder charge in Lake county, Indiana.
