et al, cancellation of contract.Big Hootch Si Ills Confiscated. JSheriff Bodenhofer and Deputy Purcell made a haul of hootch in Cass township, and confiscated three stills of large capacity yesterday afternoon. These stills were found upon the premises of Gert Gcrdes and Henry Ulferts.At the Gerdes home they secured a half gallon of manufactured alcohol and there they alBO discovered ten gallons of mash. At this place there were two stills, one was a large double stilt of about 60 gallon capacity. At the IJl-fert place they found a still of about the same capacity, six or eight gallons of manufactured hootch and seven barrels of mash. At the Lawrence Le-barge home they found a barrel of mash; .but did„ not discover the still. They found the stove where the still had been operated, and which was overturned when the- officers approached, and they also found where the manufactured product had been turned out on the cellar bottom to avoid its confiscation.At one of these places the hootchwas made in an underground dug* out, which was covered with barnyard manure, thus giving it the appearance of being A* big manure pile. The stills and hootch wore taken to Auumosa, and the cases are being prepared for the action of the grand jury, which convenes next week.Gert Gerdes was the only one of the men at home when the officers appeared, and they.reported that he cried like a' child, when he was disturbed in his little money making enterprise. These places have been under suspicion for some time, on account of the regular trips of certain automobiles to a point a quarter of a mile dls-taut from the houses. The report Is that a Cedar Rapids automobile made regular trips to the vicinity, and that hootch was carried from the houses to the automobiles, care being taken not to have the automobiles drive directly to the houses,. where the hootch was manufactured. The Indications are that the manufacture has been on a rather extensive scale.Cass township has been a hootch center, several .arrests and the confiscation.of stills having been made in: that township heretofore. Henry Ul-rerts lives, on the George Thomas farm, Thomas being a non-resident of the state, Gerdes is on his own farm. Both are in the northern part of the township. Lebarge is pn the county line, and it may be that be lives across the line in Linn county, of that we arenot assured.
