Ritter in the United States district court here, after he had pleaded guilty to embezzling $1,658.55 of the bank’s funds.In suspending sentence Judge Ritter took into consideration the contents of several letters from influential residents of Baton Rouge, in which the writers/asking for clemency for Coppenex, recited circumstances under which the bank teller found himself.A man is indeed fortunate who has substantial friends when he is in trouble,” Judge Ritter told the accused,The evidence showed that Coppenex had eight children, one of whom died recently, He also had his mother-in-law and other members of the family to support, bringing the number dependent upon him to 13,I first took small sums to stave off my creditors,” Coppenex said. “Then when I still found myself in heavy debt I look other sums.
