mm.mum HHimniiiinimmim I » .....Almost An Entire Family KilledGas Fumes KillA seventh person in critical condition; tragedy discovered by relativezBy Barry Mathews Journal Staff WriterABILENE — Dickinson County Sheriff Wayne Woolverton blamed fumes from an unvented living room heater as the cause of “the worst asphyxiation case I’ve ever worked” Saturday.The fumes took the lives of a young mother, four of h.er five children, and her father; and hospitalized her husband in critical condition.Bead are Mrs. Gerald D. Woods, 33; her four children, David, 13; Diane, 11; Debbie, 9; and Donna, 7; and R. L, McNutt, 58, her father.Woods was still unconscious Saturday night at Abilene Memorial hospital.The tragedy was discovered about 1:30 pm Saturday by Amer (Bud) Reese jr., Junction City, whose wife, Linda, is Mrs. Woods’ sister.The Woods family had moved only recently into the farm home near Industry, 13 miles north of Abilene.“They had made ready for bed, and possibly had gone to bed last night (Friday), Woolverton said. “It had to be after dark because there were lights on in the kitchen and bedroom.“The grandfather was in the bathroom, the three little girls were on a couch in the dining room, the father was lying on the floor in the dining room, the little boy was on the sofa in the living room, and the mother was in bed.Woolverton said the victims had apparently been dead several hours.To Make Tests Dr, J. W. Bell, coroner, said it appeared the deaths were caused by carbon monoxide, but laboratory tests would have to be made.A fifth ehild, Danny, 4, wasn’t home at the time o( the tragedy. He had stayed overnight in Abilene with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Woods.With Reese when he discovered the bodies was his wife ,her mother, Mrs. R. L. McNutt, and her grandfather. Mrs. McNutt had spent the week visiting Mrs. Reese in Junction City, while Mr. McNutt visited the Woods family at their farm home.Mr. and Mrs. McNutt and Mrs. McNutt’s father are from Fort Collins, Colo.“They had only lived here about a week, an Industry resident, Mrs. Lavina Lum, told The Journal. “The kids had just started in school here a week or two ago.The Woods family had rented the farm home from John Schneider, Abilene RFD 4, andhad moved there a little over one week ago. Mrs. Woods' employer at the Wagon Wheel restaurant in Abilene, Francis Steele, said Schneider had given them free rent in exchange for fixing up the house.Ruth worked here off an on as a waitress for a number of years, and she was a darned good one, too, Steele said. “She worked before Christmas and planned to come back next week.“I just couldn’t believe it when I heard about it. Ruth was my standby girl, always available when I needed her,Woods works as a driver forthe Abilene Steam Laundry,“He was my laundry man, said Sheriff Woolverton. “He used to come up and pick up laundry. He’d never said anything to me about moving into a new home.”Woods is a lifetime Abilene resident.
