Brewer trial reset March 5TALLADEGA—The trial of former Talladega County Sheriff Luke Brewer has been reset for March 5.Hue! M Love degense attorney for Brewer in two embezzlement cases originally set for today, filed a motion in an open court session Saturday for a continuance and special trial judge L S. Moore granted it.Prosecuting attorneys Bill MeKmght for the state attorney general's office and BobMorrow, a deputy district attorney from Selma assigned to the case did not oppose the continuance.Love s motion asked for a continuancebecause a key defense witness, Johnny Carroll had escaped jail and is not available Carroll, along with two others, escaped the Talladega County Jail on the night of Jan 9MC KNIGHT SAID the attorney general s office is issuing a flight warrant for CarrollThu would enable the Federal Bureau ofInvestigation to search for himThe two embezzlement cases against the veteran sheriff were scheduled to be heard in Talladega Circuit Court today They among seven charges returned against Brewer last April by a grand juryThe grand jury also recommended Brewer’s impeachment and that ruling was sanctioned by the Alabama Supreme Courtlast September.OTHER CHARGES included two counts of buying, receiving and concealing stolen property, one count each of accepting a bribe and challenging to a duel, and threatening and harassment over the telephoneAccording to Judge Moore and the two prosecuting attorneys, March 5 was the earliest that could be set for the trial due toprior commitments
