The cutting wa.s all done for the Gull River LumberCompaii}' by parties under con-inwinTh(tract or by men in their employ under the direction of its foremanand director, Thomas Narey. The comimnyclaims the trespass was unintentional in every case but admits earelessne.ss in some instances. Itproposes to pay stumpage value formo.st of the timber cut, but offersmill value, $5.50 perl;000 tor 6,-50t feet, admitting great careles-ness as to the cutting of the same. The secretary says it is highly inprobable that over three thousand pine trees should be cut ongovernment land and the companybe entirely ignorant of the fact. The agent claimed he made a mistake about the lines, and the secretary says he has observed thatthese mistakes always lead to cutting govornment nine and the mistakes never come into the lumbercompany’s pine from the outside. He declines to accept stumpage asoffered, saying that this simplencourages stealing, as the company can make a good thing at it.He recommends that the agent beprosecuted criminally, and that a civil suit for the timber taken—about $4,590 in value—be brought against the Gull River Lumbercompany.popthathisam( of aSISSpetithepassmalfactNoidanan i subprismeipos.lt;haswillin * costrouSt.ernmeioutdonas ] thelam
