(R) — Five Rock Quarry Prison convicts involved in a fresh outbreak of self-multila-tion did not claim they were protesting alleged brutal treatment or oppressive working conditionst the state prison director said.Jack Forrester, director of the State Department of Corrections, said the two smashed their legs Monday with 20-pound sledgehammers. Three others, he said, were prevented from smashing theirs by foremen.He quoted one as saying he “thought it was the nearest wayout of here.’*The five Negro convicts broke away from a work force while returning to the quarry from a rest ( period, Forrester reported. He f said they hid behind a rock from ' tower guards and grabbed sledgehammers to smash their legs.Convicts have been separated from their hammers during rest ( periods since last July, when 41 inmates mutilated themselves in a two day outbreak of leg smash- * ing.((
