W. H. Logan, who drives a team, and HUves over in Pickwick, and who has alway. borne the character of a reputable citizen, was today arrested by Deputy I*, s. Marsha Fulton, and taken to Keokuk, on charge oi bootlegging wlilskv. The witnesses against him are said to be Mike O'Halloran (w ho It under bond for selling whisky;, Jim Hobbs, w ho has frequently been before the police court for fighting with Ids wife, and John Urlggs. It is believed by people who know i-ogan to be a set up Job and a piece of spite ]work, as Ixgan is one of the principal witnesses in several whisky eases. The above article we copy from theOttumwa Courier of the l*2th inst. Weart1 not especially acquainted with Mr.Logan, but if he has been bootleggingwhisky he is probably no better, if asgood, as those people he has been informing on. All civil and militaryiaw despises a traitor, a spy and iu~former, and military law makes thecrime of a spy punishable with death. We do not say that Logan is guilty forthat is vet to be tried before theUnited States court. In the meantimeif the Courier thinks Mr. Logan isamuch abused man that paper or itseditor can show his faith by going olxgan’s bond, and thus help him outof the trouble he has got into. JohnGriggs is a reputable man. Hobbs is atruthful man, we believe, and domestic difficulties will scarce!}' impeachhis oath in the United States districtcourt, no more than would the factthat O’Halloran at one time may havebeen indicted for selling whisky on \the oath of such fellows as Logan. If s iit is a crime to sell liquor and Ixiganis guilty ofselling without license heshould be punished more severely thanhis less offending neighbors who paytheir license to the government. Someof these prohibition cranks are very(erratic in upholding the cause of “law1iand order.” If we recollect right, j (two or three years ago this syndicate lt;of moral pinks imported a pimp, spy 1and informer by the name of Monroe, furnished him with money to keep him \fdrunk for two or three weeks, fed him fon the fat of the land, and even in thecourt room of the district court ofWapello county filled his pockets with trevolvers loaded with powder an 1 c ball to kill peopie with, so it is alleged,! 1and we believe the fact was afterwardproved. Monroe always had funds j furnished him by the editor of the 1I fCourier or some one else, had his N meals in his private room in a first sclass hotel, and all in the name of the iLord a ad the great Republican party. c If Logan is guilty, we do not pretend j to say whether he is or not, let him pay \ his fine like a man or lay it out in tjail as other, and per ha; s, just as good Jmen as he is are compelled to do. If ^he is not guilty the courts will so de jclare, regardless of the opinion of the ceditor of the Courier or any other J man, and he will be exonerated fromfdl blame.I-
