(Berta» CSrifllt h. notorious criminal and life-ti rmor. who escaped from the* Moundsville penitentiary after killing two fellow convicts and setting fire to the tailor shop of the penitentiary. Henry Lewis, aged 28 years, who was cut by Griffith, who escaped in the excitement, died in the prison hospital a short time later. Ho had been slashed across the abdomen by Griffith.Lewis and Henry Lucas, a prisoner from Kanawha county, attempted to prevent the escape and were cut by Griffith. Lucas died almost immediately. Penitentiary officials are confident of recapturing Griffith within a short time and all roads and railroads are being closely guagled.The fire is believed to have boon planned as a general break for liberty by inmates of the prison. Only the vigilance of the guards frustrated the plan. The fire did little damage outside the tailor shop.
