Midgettes’ Indianhead winBy JASON JUNOsports@yourdailyglobe.comPORT WING, Wis. — The last time Hurley lost an Indian-head Conference game, George W. Bush was still president, the economy wasn’t an issue and Megan Gustafson was in fifth grade.Gustafson’s (6-3) 37-point, 27-rebound performance helped the unbeaten South Shore Cardinals survive Hurley’s nearly game-long comeback attempt for a 73-61 win Friday night. South Shore broke the Midgettes’ incredible 84-game conference winning streak, dating back to a 59-58 loss at Mellen on Dec. 14, 2007.It felt like March outside with temperatures in the 40s and it seemed like March inside with a tournament atmosphere the way both teams played and Hurley reacted to good plays. The Midgettes performed like they wanted the streak to continue.“I’ve been using that as a motivator technique for the last few weeks,” South Shore coach Clendon Gustafson said. “We had this game circled on the calendar from the beginning of the year. But I’ll you what, they are a quality, tough basketball team.”The much taller Cardinals took a 17-2 lead right off the bat over the guard-oriented Midgettes.
