Woman Held in 'Accidental' Shooting of Negro 'Handyman'Charged in the shooting death of a 25-year-old Negro, a Northside white woman was free on a $2,500 bond Thursday after appearing Jan. 4 in Municipal Court 5 on a preliminary charge of manslaughter.Mrs. Elnora Maguire, 1839 N. King, was arrested late Jan. 3, one day after the shooting, and charged with the death of Arthur McKinney, Plaza Hotel, | Room 238. She was to reappear in the same court on Jan. 11 before Judge John C. Christ.McKinney was 'found lying between the hallway and the bathroom of the woman’s home. He had been shot in the left side of his chest and had neither shoes nor coat on although the woman contended he had “just walked in the door.”THE 44-YEAR-OLD Mrs. Maguire on the day of the shooting told police McKinney had walked into her home by way of the side door and picked up an automatic, which was lying on the table.She said McKinney was playinr around with the gun, which accidentally went off,! but only aftershe warned, “Look out! There’s a shell in the chamber.”Homicide Det. Sgt. Leonard Dehn said Wednesday that he and his partner, Det. Sgt. Carl D. Michaelis, arrested Mrs. Maguire after “our investigation showed things were not as previously reported.”When asked why the woman was charged with manslaughter instead of murder, the detective said that “the elements of premeditation were missing.”When further questioned as to how the victim’s shoes and coat were off despite the woman’s say-ng he had just entered the house, sergeant Dehn said, “I don’t think ve had better go into all that because we are still in the preliminary hearing stage.”Police reports indicated that two apparently • empty beer eans were found sitting on the kitchen table.The gun was also found lying on lie table.
