Held Officers at Bay.About a year ago Hiatt stole a horse and buggy of J. W. Wright of Jason-ville and made his escape. After being at large for some time he was finally located at East St Louis and officials at that place attempted his arrest. He was found in the railroad yards and when the officers accosted him he backed up against, a freight car and with drawn pistol defied them. He held them at bay until a switch engine with a cat of cars passed a few minutes later, when he sprang aboard the cars and made his escape. He then wandered back toward Terre Haute where he was located by the officers and arrested. He was taken to Bloomfield and placed in jail. At this point the woman in the | case, Florence Clark, 22 years of age, I of Linton, who seems to be an old | sweetheart of Hiatt, put in an appearance. She would carry him things to the jail and was once caught in the act of taking him tools by which he was calculated to effect his escape. As a result she became his fellow prisoner.
