Bank breaking and burglary has been almost a nightly occurrence over the country and nearby towns have been among the sufferers, but op to last night Attica has escaped. Burglars entered the Jewelry store of O. C. DeSelms and the grocery of F. M. Lau-man by breaking in the back doors of both places. They also made an unsuccessful attempt on the rear entrance of the J. A. Co fling establishment. This morning at about 2:00 o’clock Night Patrolmen Will ColUna and Frank Benamlre discovered the light out and the rear aide door of the De-Selms Jewelry store open and later on the rear door of Frank Lauman’s grocery otore was found open. Messrs. DeSelms and 1-aoman were Immediately called up by the policemen and upon the arrival of the merchants it was found there had been a genuine burglary. At the DeSelms place the thieves had gained entrance by neatly cutting a hole In the glass in the door, reaching In and turning the key In the lock. After gaining access the yeggs gathered up all the loose Jewelry In sight, using good judgment in selecting only the pure gold quality. Mr. DeSelms estimate* his loss at about $400. In the collection taken were three ladies' hunting gold filled watches, 6-0 slzs, crown; one lady's solid gold watch, O ■lse. movement high grade; six lady’s bracelet watches, gold filled. Swiss movements. 9*L; four gold filled bead neck chains; one LaTusca pearl bead necklace, one bracelet and watch holder, gold filled; ten gold chain la-vallers and pendants; one gent’s silk fob Masonic emblem charm; one gent's silk fob Odd Fellows' emblem charm; two gent’s gold filled fobs;two cigarette ear rings. At Mr. Lauman’s grocery the thieves gained entrance by smashing the glass in the back door and lifting the bar that was across the door. They robbed the caah register of $1.60, took a few cigars, and tampered with the safe.- They most have made a rapid getaway from this latter place, as they dropped some of the De8elms jewelry on the floor. They visited the rear door of the Coding establishment before they went to lauman’s as tracks were plainly seen In the light snow leading from the former place to the rear door of the lauman grocery. It Is thought their object Irsyvisiting the Cofling store was to steal an automobile In which to make their getaway. The police and Mr. DeSelms Immediately got busy, ths wires were put Into operation and surrounding towns were notified of the robbery. The Wabash depot was Immediately visited and two suspicious characters were encountered here. They were questioned but were let go, and they left the depot, but the police and Mr. De-Selma again visited the depot and ad that the men had returned and get tickets for Danville. They were again questioned and as their second story conflicted with the first told, they were arrested and Jailed. In their conversation they divulged the fact that there was a third party In the stealing. The two young men arrested are of medium build, one dark complected the other UghL Both claimed to have served In the navy during the war. They gave their names as Clark Prsso, and Wm. Stearne, of 10 N. State St.. and 1919 Cannon St. Danville, Illinois. They gave ths name of the third party as Victor Salmon, 96 Griffin St. Danville, 111.Marshal Beamer searched the prisoners and found In their possession a number of pennies which corresponded with the pennies taken from the Lauman store. He also took one of their shoes and fitted It into the tracks In the si*»w behind the Cofflng store. This Is pretty conclusive evidence that the police have the right parties. One of the stolen watches was found near the Wabash depot, which was undoubtedly put there by the men when they left ths depot after being questioned by ths police ths first time. Later on a valise was found by Frank Odeham stored away under toms steps near the door of the depot The valise contained moat of ths stolen Jewelry, but there is still some missing. This Is mors convicting evidence against the man arrested. Th«•NO CHEAP SHOES BUT GOOD SHOES CHEAP1
