In the struggle the tramp struck Mr. Smith a severe blow knocking him backwards and causing him to fall through the hole where the hay is let down to the horses. Mr. Smith sayB that after falling through the hole he lost all consciousness, and that when he recovered, the barn was one mass of flames and that his clothes were on fire. He managed t® tear the ; tw, c’othing from his person, when he en-' deavored to get out of the stable, hut-j becoming bewildered lost his bearing and sank to the fl ’or unconscious again.By this time a large crowd of people had assembled in the vicinity. Some of them hearing a sound as of some one moaning,coming from the interior of the birning building,started the report that it was Mr. Smith. Frank Mayer, a new member of the Fire Department, gallantly rushed to the rescue, and forcing his way into the burning mass discovered Mr. Smith ljing on the floor with nothing on his person except his undershirt. He picked him up and carried him out into the open air where it wss discovered that he was horribly burned.He was then carried into the house and a physician was summoned.Dre. Mitchell and Rank were soon on hand and did all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the injured man, who is burned in a horrible manner.His hands are burned deeply, the skin earning cff like a glove. His legs from the ankles to the hips are also badly burned, as are also his sides. His face, h°ad and neck are terribly parched, and the skin from his lips has dropped off.The physicians say that there is a slight chance of his beicg able to pnll through although his injuries are considered extremely serious It is presumed thst the second tramp who attacked Mr. Smith, after knocking him through the hatchway before making his escape, applied the match in order to cover up his fiendish work. It is safe to presume tha lt;should the perpetrators of this fiendish crime be captured short work would be made of them.
