vote of condolence with the wife and family.Extensive Bobbery on Shipboard at Birkenhead.—On Monday, at the Birkenhead Police-court, before Richard Bryans, Esq., 'William O’Brien, dressed as a sailor, was charged with having stolen 40 lbs. weight of Cavendish tobacco. Mr. Matthew Bracegirdle, captain of the British barque Palmas, said that he left his ship, which was in the Morpeth Dock, Birkenhead, about 11 o’clock, and^on returning at half-past four in the afternoon he met the prisoner, who had no business on board the ship, coming out of the cabin. He asked O’Brien what he was doing there, and the answer he received was,“ Oh, not much.” Seeing that the prisoner’s breast i looked bulky, he put his hand inside his waistcoat, and found some tobacco. He at once gave the prisoner in charge to police officer Tyson,, and then went into the cabin, which had been broken into. On the table he found a box, which had been emptied of 401bs. of Cavendish tobacco, worth, less the duty, Is. 6d. a pound. That box had been removed from his state-room, where it had been left by the Customs authorities sealed up. At the Bridewell the captain said, “ It can do you no good to keep the remainder of the tobacco, for if it is not found I shall have to pay the duty.” Whereupon the prisoner said he would take the officer and show him where the rest of the tobacco wae. The captain, the officer, and O’Brien then went to the dock, and in a cart, upon some waste ground, the remainder of the tobacco was found, covered over with straw. Police-officer Tyson gave confirmatory testimony. The prisoner said he had nothing to say except that the captain had stated that he would be under 100/. penalty if the rest of the tobacco was not produced, and so he went and showed him where it was hid.
