Wayward Youth AlmostKills His StepmotherLeague to SellPONTIAC, Mich. (UP)TheiPeanuts for PolioyJunior Welfare League members will be selling “Peanuts for Polio” this weekend.Several downtown business establishments, along with Van's store, will be headquarters for the peanut sale Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p m.Two hundred pounds of peanuts were packaged in labeled bags Tuesday night at a regular Junior League meeting in preparation for the project. The peanuts were purchased from a local store and freshly roasted for the event. More than 1,000 bags of peanuts are expected to be sold, with all proceeds earmarked for the polio fund.Mrs. Don Oosterbaan is the league's general chairman for the project. Her group chairmen are Mrs. Clarence Van Liere, Mrs. Ben Bowmaster, Mrs. John Percival, Mrs. Julius Karsten, Mrs. Paul Winchester and Mrs. John De Haan, Jr Mrs. Derk Van Haalte is distribution chairman.League members will work In shifts at the peanut sales counters, where caryiisters will be placed for purchase donations.Mrs. Bill Venhuizen, president, presided at the regular league meeting Tuesday night at the Woman’s Literary Club. He was allowed to leave the home for delinquent boys to spend the Christmas holidays at home.The doctor’s wife, Sadie, saidshe drove Eric back to Albion last Sunday. School officials said he never checked in.Matheny said he and his wife were awakened bv a noise in their kitchen about 10:15 p.m. They tried to turn on the lights but found the main electric switch and the telephone wires had been ripped out.When we entered the kitchen T cou'd see no one. Matheny said. Then a voice which I recognized as Eric's told me 1o get some money. I heaM a gun being cocked and we ran to the bedroom and barricaded door.Matheny said he and and wife were standing at their bedroom window calling to neighbors for help when they heard a shot. The bullet, from a high-powered deer rifle, crashed into the bedroom, missing Mrs. Matheny by inches.Prosecutor Fred Ziem scheduled a conference with Matheny and court officials to discuss the handling the case.
