Leo Hardy of the Burnside police said Schmitt to’d investigators that earlv Monday evening he had met “Kitty” at 79th st. and Ashland ave, and that after having several drinks in a tavern at 79th st and Viniennes ave they went to the bakery for coffee and cookies and remained there until 12 30 am When they piepared to leave the shop, police said, Schmitt noticed three men m front of the place He hesitated momentarily, thinking they might be holdup men but when “Kittv” pointed out that thev were pinbablv onlv intoxicated, they decided to leave the stoi eWhen Srhmitt locked the door the three men assailed him Dui-ing the tussle “Kitty” ran Police said Schmitt met “Kitty” through a friend and that thev were out together on New Yeai's eveSchmitt said the holdup men hit him over the head and that when he yelled for police one of the trio said, “Lei him have it ”Schmitt was able to give police a discription of the men who shot him .vestciday He said that one of them was about 22 years old of light complexion and wore a tan gabardine jacket. The second man was judged to be 28 and of riaik complexion and woie a light tan jacket The third man was believed to he 40 to 50 years old and wore a dark suit Schmitt told police the rnbbcis abandoned their car and made their getaway on foot. ,Police said yesterday that an army uniform identified as belonging to a soldier who is AWOL from Camp Hood, Tex . was found in the automobile which was left near the bakery.
