'Dare-Slaying'iTrial OpensCase Opens in BryanFor Edgerton ManBryan, Feb. 27—Vernon O. Bigger, 34, Edgerton, went on trial today in Williams county common pleas court for the Jan. 2 “dare-slaying'* of his wife, Helen, 34.Bigger, who confessed shooting his wife because “she dared me to and I did,” is charged with first-degree murder. He has entered a plea of innocent.The shooting occurred in the Bigger home after the defendant and his wife returned from anear by tavern.Bigger, an ex-factory worker, has maintained he had no quarrel with his wife prior to the shooting, and that it all resulted from her sudden dare five min-! utes before he shot her once above the heart.Mrs. Bigger died almost instantly. Bigger surrendered to Marshal Ralph Sarver in Edgerton a short while later.The Biggers had been married 14 years and had four children.
