A Wife Convicted of Poisoning.A women named Anais Toussaint was recently convicted in Canada and sentenced to death for having poisoned her husband to whom she had been married only a few months; the Quebec papers describe the accused as young and good looking. The evidence against her, according to the report of the trial, was wholly circumstantial. Shortly before Christmas the husband, with whom she repeatedly quarreled, was taken sick; his wife nursed him, and it was noticed that after she had given him gruel or medicine he was taken with violent vomitings and burnings of the stomach* until he died. A post-mortem examination disclosed the presence in the stomach# of a large quantity of ars-nic. It was also proved tbat the accused had purchased arsnic, as she alleged, to kill rats, One female witness, the intimate friend of the accused before raarraige testiGed as follows: j*1 Lave known the prisoner for the last three years. She was one of my greatest i friends. I regarded her as a sister. Be- j fore her inarraigc we conversed together; in relation to it. She said she was going j to marry Joseph Bison, b. observed, L i thought you did not much like him?’— j She replied, not much.’ She said she j. liked Fricotte best—but that her father j had told her that if she took Fricotte he , would cast her olf as his child. She ad-ded that it was all the same, that she j would take Bison and if he did not suit her she would cause his death. I asked her with what she would cause his death? Prisoner replied,' with poison.’ She risked me wbat I would do under such circumstances? I said I would rather never marry than do such a thing.’There was other evidence of her threats to poison her husband. The defense ar- j gued the posibility of the deceased having been an arsnic eater, whose death , might have been caused either by an over dose or for want of a regular allowance of the drug. The jury convicted her, unless the government commute her! sentence she will be hung.
