* Gunshot WoundBrings Lawsuit.1David E. Gates Asks $100,000 for Injuries October, 1966.A $100,000 damage suit was filed in Livingston County circuit court today,- Named as a defended in the suit, filed by David E. Cates of RF£ 5, ChiHieothe, is John Tauchen.The petition states that Gates, 19, suffered personal injuries as a result of a gunshot wound on Oct. 31, 1966. According to the petition, Gates and Tauchen were hunting about 10 to 12 miles north and east of Chilli* eothe on the above date when Gates was wounded in a hunting accident.Gates was shot in the upper right chest and under part of the right arm at close range.A news item which appeared at the time of the incident stated:“Sheriff Kelsie Reefer said he understood the Gates boy was on top of a ditch bank, attempted to assist Tauchen to the top by grasping the barrel of a 20-gauge shotgun and that when he pulled on it the gun went off.”Gates was brought to the Chil-lieothe hospital. A blood relay was made by the highway patrol from Kansas City and later Gates was transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center.
