Va., who was convicted on Jan. 27 of fatally stabbing an elderly couple, who also lived in Elkins, robbing them of $40, yesterday was handed two life terms to run consecutively in the West Virginia Penitentiary by Judge Robert C. Halbritter in Preston County Circuit Court, Kingwood.Judge Halbritter sentenced Currence to the penitentiary in Moundsville for the rest of his natural life in the fatal stabbing of Frank Wimer, a former high school coach.Currence was given a second life sentence in the death of Wimer’s wife, Eleanor in 1981.A Preston County Circuit Court jury deliberated 90minutes on Jan 27 before convicting Currence of first degree felony murder in lastyear’s deaths of the couple.The felony murder verdicts were returned because the deaths occurred during a robbery.After being sentenced yesterday the defendant was remanded to the Preston County jail.During his trial, Currence testified he stabbed the Wimers and took the money, but said he had been drinking and suffered from “blackouts.”The state’s case was presented by James Cain, prosecuting attorney for Randolph County. Currence was represented by Hugh Rogers Jr. and Robert G. Durnal, Randolph County attorneys.
