SL(] Police Officer FiredSALT IAKE CITY (UPI) — A veteran police officer who fatally shot a father of five during a scuffle was fired from the force Wednesday, three months after the shooting.Richard Childs. 34, who joined the police force in November, 1965. was fired immediately for conduct unbecoming a police officer.In a letter informing Childs of his immediate dismissal, Chief Dewey Fillis said theofficer violated city ordinances on the conduct and authority of city employes;indulged in conduct tending to discredit the department and conduct subversive to good order and the discipline of the department, and disobeyed orders, rules and regulations.Childs, off duty at the time, shot and killed Joe Oliver Herrera, 36, outside a downtown cafe Nov. 18, 1975.The shooting followed an argument inside the cafe and then a scuffle outside in which Childs said Herrera threatened him with a knife.Childs pulled his gun and shot Herrera in the head.
