He was given a preliminary trial Tuesday morningbefore Esquire Randall at Vernon; he waved examination, and was bound over to the next term of the Jennings circuit court. The charge against him was assault with intent to kill. His bond was placed at $5,000. Burt New has been retained to defend Robbins,A,queer thing in regard to the shot Robbins olaims. to have been fired at him is, that in the right hand casing of the door of Robbins’ house a bullet about one-half inch in diameter is sticking, which looks as though it had been pounded in, as all around it thereare hammer marks, showing that someone had been doing his best to drive it in. Neighbors say that after the shooting a light was seen at the Robbins door and hammering was heard.Mr. Koontz is a married man. 52 years old, has a family of sevenchildren, and has never had any trouble until several weeks ago, when he had a few words with Willis Robbins who he claims was mistreating them. It is further stated that Robbins never intended to shoot Koontz, but thought it was Stearns’ brother-in-law.Frank Stearns is 33 years old, has a wife and five small children, and had been a resident of Queens-ville only a few weeks. He lives in a house belonging to Absalom Robbins, father of Willis Robbins; about a week ago Robbins made a remark about Stearns not payinghis rent, which might have been the cause of a grudge between the men. Stearns, at the time of the shooting, was filled past the reasoning mark with whisky, and it was stated by a neighbor that he had a bottle of liquor with him at thetime of the trouble.Willis Robbins, is a married man, 58 years old, and has three children by a former wife living. In the four years that he lived at Queonsville neighbors state he was an excellent man when sober, but when drunk, which was quite often, he was very “ugly” and often ready to fight anyone that crossed his path.
