Mom not competent for trialMcKINNEY (AP) — A woman diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression after cutting off her baby’s arms is not competent to stand trial on a capital murder charge, a jury decided Monday. The verdict came after only minutes of deliberations in Dena Schlosser’s brief competency trial. Prosecutors and defense attorneys each asked jurors to find her incompetent so that she could be treated at a mental hospital before standingtrial.Attorneys said they expected the judge on Thesday to issue an order committing Schlosser to the North Texas State Hospital-Vernon Cam pus for 120 days. She will remain there until hospital officials determine she is competent to stand trial. The 36-year-old housewife was chaiged with capital murder Nov. 22, after she told a 911 operator she had severed 10-month-old Margaret’s arms. Police found Schlosser in the living room, covered in blood, still holding a knife and listening to a church hymn.During Monday’s proceeding, she sat slumped in her chair, staring ahead. Black belts restrained her ankles and her wrists, which were bound close to her waist.“We’re just glad that the jury saw it our way, ” defense attorney David Haynes said. “It wasn’t a surprise. It was what the evidence showed.”He said Schlosser was “overwhelmed , kind of numb and glad to have it over. ”Earlier Monday, a court-appointed psychiatrist testified that Schlosser suffers from bipolar disorder and depression and is a severe suicide risk.“She’s stated over and over that she wishes she’d been allowed to go with her daughter,” said Dr. David Self.
