Park Forest cops confiscate $10,000 in stolen goods, charge Heights manBy Robin TankoPark Forest police recovered some $10,000 in stolen property from a 69-year-old Chicago Heights man who allegedly traded the goods for drugs and cash.Excell Harris, 353 Boston, Chicago Heights, was charged Saturday with felony theft of stolen property, which could be upgraded to a more serious felony count pending further inventory of the hundreds ofrecovered items, Park Forest Detective Mike McNamara said.Harris also was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance following the joint undercover investigation conducted by Park Forest and Chicago Heights detectives.After Park Forest DetectiveMitchell Davis received a tip about alleged drug dealing in Harris’ Beacon Hill neighborhood, the detectives executed a search warrant of Harris’ home, police said.Recovered items include 12 bags of crack cocaine; two handguns; dozens of ladders allegedly stolen from Jones Intercable; several cable converters; some 100 remote controls; laptop computers; compressors; generators; riding lawn mowers; snow blowers; dozens of bicycles; staple guns, and a massage table, McNamara said,Harris allegedly paid thieves for the merchandise either with cash or crack, according toMcNamara,“It took two days to catalog the items,” McNamara said. “He hadbeen fencing the property foryears.”Detectives seized a U-Haul rental truck loaded with merchandise, which, according to Harris, he had planned to sell at the Maxwell Street Market in Chicago.Police also confiscated sixtelevisions, two VCRs, $200worth of meat and several hundreds of dollars worth of alcohol.The months of investigation could close the book on various theft cases in the area.“This tied up a lot of loose ends,” McNamara said.Detectives involved in the investigation include Clifford Butz, TTiomas Fleming and Peter Green from Park Forest and Alex Romano, Bert Wolf and Chris Kinder from Chicago Heights.
