Federalprisonto receive fundingJEANNINE CLEGGWASHINGTON — The federal prison now under construction outside Cumberland will receive $35.7 million under President Clinton’s proposed spending plan.The money is for the correctional facility’s first year of operation, said Greg Bragdon, a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons. It also will cover staff salaries and one-time costs, such as beds and food service equipment, he said.Prison construction is scheduled to be completed in July. The first inmates should arrive in the fall, Bragdon said.The Mexico Farms prison will be staffed with approximately 285 employees. Only about 10members of the management team have been named so far, including the warden, associate wardens, chief correctional supervisor and personnel director, Bragdon said.The prison’s medium security section will be able to house850-1,000 inmates while the min-imum-security camp will take up to 250 inmates when completed, Bragdon said.Clinton’s spending plan first must be approved by Congress before the prison money is released.Dennis Bidwell, the warden, will transfer from the Federal Correctional Institution in Morgantown, W.Va.Speaking at a meeting of theCumberland Rotary Club earlierthis week, Mr. Bidwell said he wants the facility to be accepted into the community as a positive influence.Mr. Bidwell and the prison’s executive staff will report to Cumberland the week of April 17, and will operate from rented space until construction is complete.
