Sfafhlde(Continued from Page 3) household, but don't laugh. It's happened in Manitowoc four times over the past six months.According to Manitowoc Police Captain of Detectives Robert Schmidt, four elderly Manitowoc women have been victimized by the three. “They fast talk themselves into the house and take what they can grab. Schmidt said. “They just hit houses at random and one keeps the occupant occupied, the other two go through the house.”The most recent incident occurred in the morning of Feb. 7 at a west side home. Approximately $1,000 and a number of rings were taken.Another ploy used by the group is to ask the home owner for old clothes for an undisclosed charity. That was used back in December.Apparently, the three women, described as being of southern European descent, have been apprehended in Green Bay after being seen entering a house. The three have been connected with the Manitowoc crimes, Schmidt said, and at least one of the women has been identified by a local victim. The Manitowoc district attorney has issued a complaint against one of the women, for burglary. Schmidt said.Although past crimes may have been cleared up, the arrest of the three women in Green Bay may not stop future thefts.“They'll probably be operating in the area again soon, Schmidt said, “Then again, maybe this will stop them for a while. What can elderly people living alone do if someone barges in'7 Call the police.“If something like this happens. they should go to the phone and call us immediately, Schmidt said.“I hate to tell old people to lock their doors, that’s a sad thing. But its the only way with these people around.”— DAVE RANK
