The flames made rapid progress, although the Hyacks were quickly on the spot. The house was a largo one, nud was completely surrounded by smallwooden.tenements. . It appcaro nowalmost a miracle that the firemen, however efficient, and guided as they were by Capt. Fisher und Chief Engineer Webster, were enabled to confine the conflagration to tho premises where it first originated. At one time the flames assumed a moBt threatening appearance, and from their brilliancy and volume, produced a very striking effect. Holy Trinity Church was brought out into bold relief, and the other principal buildings in the vicinity, presented all the distinctness of a picture. Being only a 6hort distarce from the Hyaek Hall, the Fire King was not taken out of the station, and a copious supply of water being at hand iu tho taak, the fire, fierco as it was, had a powerful opponent, and was ultimately forced to succumb. The destruction of the house, however, and everything it contained, was most comp1ete,nothing but smoking embers remained when ihe fire was gut under. A lady staying in the house at the tirne lost a quantity of jewellery and money, but much leas than was at first supposed; she discovered after the first excitement, that sue had her gold watch and diamonds (about $1,800 in value) in her pocket; her loss is probably about $200. The house, furniture, headingand other articles have been cstirnat-}ed at $3,500 or $4,000. The insurance amounted to $2,000 only; onethousand each in the Royal and Phoenix Companies. The cause of the fire is unknown, but so far as may be judged must have commenced in the kitchen, near the stove. An inquest was held before F. G. Claudet, E*q.. J. P., and a most respectable jury, when a verdict was at onco returned that the fire was the result of accident Mr. Herring’s loss by tho fire must be large, and his loss from the stoppage of the business, will bo also serious, as the house was an old established one, aud well patronized.mg me !i»*8 OB'g.ble osefnblycree ofberd ol !lt;*»«] Nurd, i that co tho Ge ductedBom Gth iu Min:etLonjmet, a prc6enHuppotbo urr say ill! sustuii sion oi is exp* ladenon 31d don gi sioner resign i der Ti gundy Brl’6Lyons that a retreathe wasF ranct rectior Times able friug foiAt-.
