She was dark complexioned and about five feet one inch tall.Police said the body apparently had bt-eti dumped in the lot. near Santa Monica municipal airport. JOSEPH III MAD, mili-t. rv policeman, today changed earlier stories that he “may” have killed the Mack Dahlia during a mental blackout, and reportedly confessed the crime.Joseph Dumais today “confessed” that he was the slayer of pretty Elizabeth Short, the Lo Angeles “Mack Dahlia.’ and gave details of the mutilation and dissection of her body, Army officials said. .Authorities immediately telephoned details of his statement regarding the actual slaying and mutilation to Los Angeles police for checking against the known facts. Los Angeles police had said earlier that they had provided the Fort Dix officials with questions which only the actual slayer could answer correctly.Dumais said that he was “responsible for the crime.” Fort Dix authorities said, and added that he had used a meat cleaver to sever the pretty brunette’s body after stabbing her in the back and cutting her face and mouth with a knife.He said he then washed the portions of the body of blood and left them in a vacant lot in Los Angeles, where Miss Short’s body was found on Jan. 15.Dumais said, according to Major (’. T. Morris, that he first stole an automobile and a rope, then went on a date with Miss Short, tied her up, and stabbedill'!'.There were many discrepancies in the 29-year-old soldier’s story, which still were being checked. Earlier he had said he “believed” he might have killed Miss Short, but that he had gone i into a “blackout” while on a date with her in San Francisco either Jan. 0 or 10. As yet, there was nothing in any of his statements to account for the period between that date and the finding of her body, and nothing to indicate how she went, or was ta i ken. from San Francisco to Los Angeles.Meanwhile, one soldier on the post was questioned by officers of the criminal investigation de purtment in an effort to establish Dumais’ whereabouts at the time of the actual slaying, presumably Jan. 13 to 15.
